Medical Council of India (MCI)

The Medical Council of India (MCI) is a statutory body that grants recognition of medical qualifications, gives accreditation to medical schools and is responsible for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India. MCI monitors medical practice in India.

History of MCI

There was a steady increase in the number of medical colleges over the years after Independence. With the growing demands of medical education  in India, a need was felt to make changes in medical education in the country. As a result, in 1956, the old Act was repealed and a new one was enacted. This was further modified in 1964, 1993 and 2001.

The objectives of the Council are:

  • Maintenance of uniform standards of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education,
  • Recommendation for recognition or de-recognition of medical qualifications of India or foreign countries.
  • Registration of doctors with recognized medical qualifications.
  • Reciprocity with foreign countries in the matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications.
