Border Security Force (BSF) Recruitment

The First Line of Defence of Indian Territories, the Border Security Force (BSF) was formed on 1 December 1965. It has the honor of largest guarding force in the world. Currently, BSF has 257,363 Active Personnel working with 186 battalions including an expanding air wing, marine wing, artillery regiments, and commando units. The Ministry of Home Affairs is the managing and administrative control authority to BSF. New Delhi has the Headquarters of Border Security Force.

The Head of the BSF is Director General (DG) who comes from Indian Police Service (IPS). Mr K F Rustamji IPS was the first appointed Director General to BSF.

The Union Public Service Commission administers competitive examination Civil Services for the selection of IPS, IAS, IRS and other top level administrative officers. The role of the commission is to conduct written examination, interview, publish result and recommend name of selected candidates to government.

BSF is instrumental in keeping the country safe whether its threat from neighboring countries or need  of help in the times of flood or fire, the men and women in BSF always ready to help. The milittary drill of BSF at Wagah Border attracts good number of national and international spectators. The BSF battalions located at Guwahati, Patna and Kolkata are designated at National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). This is a multi-disciplinary, multi-skilled, high-tech force. Each battalion has 1,158 personnel. These personnel are trained to handle all type of natural disasters including NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) threats.

The BSF personnel come from diverse academic backgrounds; school pass outs, college graduates, engineers, doctors, medical professionals and candidates with skills are recruited by BSF on regular basis. All selected candidates receives combat training. The BSF is equal opportunity employer; men and women are equally welcome. For appointment written examination is conducted followed by Physical Efficiency Test, Medical Examination and Interview. Exact criteria varies in accordance with cadre and required qualification.
