NID DAT: NID Design Aptitude Test
The National Institute of Design (NID) conducts NID Design Aptitude Test i.e. NID DAT for admission to various courses. The test is held in two rounds - NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). Candidates who get shortlisted in NID DAT (Prelims) can appear for NID DAT (Mains) admission round.

NID Design Aptitude Test Eligibility Criteria
Bachelor of Design/GDPD
Find below the eligibility criteria for admission to Bachelor of Design (B.Des) course at NID Ahmedabad and Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra.
- To be eligibility for BDes/GDPD courses, candidates are required to successfully complete higher secondary (10+2) or other equivalent examination from a recognised board or university such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or other equivalent boards.
Exams accepted by the National Institute of Design are:
- 10+2 under any central or state board
- Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination under any recognized board or university
- Two-year course conducted by the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
- Senior secondary school examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.
- H.S.C. vocational examination.
- Advanced (A) level General Certificate Education (GCE) examination taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka.
- High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
- Three-year Full time Diploma after Class X offered by the Board of Technical Education of any Indian state or Union Territories
- Candidates who have successfully completed their class 12 or other equivalent examination outside India or from any board not specified above are required to produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming the examination that they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.
Age Limit for BDes/GDPD courses at NID Entrance Exam
- The age of the candidate should not be more than 20 years (23 years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST category candidates).
- The age limit of the candidates belonging to PwD Reserved Category should not be more than 25 years.
- Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) candidates should not be more than 20 years.
Master of Design
Find below the eligibility criteria for admission to M.Des. programme (any discipline)
Age Limit for M.Des. programme in NID:
- The age of the candidate should not be more than 30 years (23 years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST category candidates).
- The age limit of the candidates belonging to PwD Reserved Category should not be more than 35 years.
- Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) candidates should not be more than 30 years.
Educational Qualification for M.Des. programme in NID:
In addition to the above, the candidate must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications to be considered eligible for admissions:
- Candidate should have successfully completed their 4 years bachelor degree (any discipline), from a recognized university or institute in India.
OR
- Candidate should have successfully completed their 3 years Bachelor degree (any discipline), from a recognized university or institute in India. under the 10+2 system.
OR
- Candidate should have successfully completed their 4-years full-time Diploma in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, from any recognized university or institute in India.
In case the candidate has obtained a degree/certificate from a university/board other than India, an equivalence certificate must be obtained by the candidate.
Eligibility Criteria for Overseas Category (Supernumerary candidates) in NID
- Candidates who hold a citizenship of another country are only eligible to apply under the overseas category, provided they fulfill all other eligibility criteria.

NID Design Aptitude Test Application Process
Candidates are required to sign up/ register online by visiting the official website WWW.NID.EDU
- A valid email id and mobile number should be provided by the candidate for all future communication.
- With the successful completion of the registration process, login credentials are sent to the candidate via email.
- Log in to the official account using login and password to proceed further.
- Candidates are required to fill up the online application form with appropriate details. They need to upload their supporting documents, signature and photograph.
Required Size/Format of Photograph & Signature
- Photograph: 100 KB JPG Format
- Signature: 100 KB JPG Format
Candidates applying under any reserved category are required to submit their supporting certificates in JPG format. The size of all the documents should not be more than 150 KB.

NID Design Aptitude Test Exam Pattern
The ID Entrance Exam is conducted in two steps - NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains).
Prelims
The NID DAT (Prelims) comprises of both objective as well as subject type questions.
Duration: 3 hours
Mains
Candidates who clears the cut-off for NID DAT (Prelims), are required to appear for NID DAT (Mains) where the candidates are required to appear for a Studio Test and an Interview round. In the Studio Test for NID admissions, aspirants are given hands-on practical assignments which they need to complete in the stipulated time.
