UGC - NET December
The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted on behalf of UGC, for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in Indian Universities and Colleges. Traditionally, the UGC-NET is conducted twice a year, in June and in December.
Till June 2018, the CBSE was conducting the NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected Cities of spread across the country. However, from
Dec 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET (for Eligibility for Assistant Professor
only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant
Professor both), will be conducted by the NTA.
The award of Eligibility for Assistant Professor only OR JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both depends upon the candidate's performance in both the papers of NET in aggregate. However, those candidates who qualify exclusively for Assistant Professor are not to be considered for the award of JRF.

UGC NET December Eligibility Criteria
a. Candidates should have scored a minimum of 55% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s Degree or equivalent
examination from recognised universities/institutions.
b. Those candidates
who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree (final
year) examination and the results are awaited, candidates whose
qualifying examinations have been delayed or candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course may also apply for this test.
However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be
considered eligible for award of JRF/eligibility for Assistant Professor
only after they have passed their Master’s Degree OR equivalent
examination with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of OBC falling in
Non Creamy layer/SC/ST/PwD category candidates).
c. Candidates
belonging to the transgender category would be eligible to draw the same
relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria for NET (i.e. JRF and
Assistant Professor) as are available to SC/ST/PwD categories.
d. Candidates who are Ph.D.degree holders and whose Master’s level examination have been
completed by 19th September 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of
result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks
(i.e.from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.
e. Candidates are
advised to appear in the subject of their Post Graduation only. The
candidates, whose Post Graduation subject is not covered in the list of
NET subjects attached as Annexure-III, may appear in a related subject.
f. Candidates
are neither required to send any certificates/documents in support of
their eligibility nor printout of their Application Form (Confirmation
Page) to NTA. However, the candidates, in their own interest, must
satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the Test.
g. Candidates
having post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian
University/Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by
the foreign University/institute should in their own interest, ascertain
the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with Master’s
degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian
Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Age Limit and Relaxation
a.
JRF: The age of the candidate should not be more than 30 years as on 1st December. A relaxation of age upto 5 years
is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC (Non-creamy layer, as per
the Central list of OBC available on website: www.ncbc.nic.in)
SC/ST/PwD/Transgender categories and to women applicants.
b. Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor.
Exemption (Eligibility for Assistant Professor)
a. NET/SET/SLET shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for
recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in
Universities/Colleges/ Institutions. In this regard, exemption from
NET/SET/SLET will be governed by UGC regulations and amendments notified
in the Gazette of India from time to time.
b. The candidates who have passed the UGC/CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 are also exempted from appearing in NET.
c. For SET Candidates: The candidates who have cleared the States
Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for Assistant Professor held
prior to 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET, and are
eligible to apply for Assistant Professor anywhere in India. For SET
held from 1st June 2002 onwards, the qualified candidates are eligible
to apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the
universities/colleges situated in the State from where they have cleared
their SET.

UGC NET Exam Pattern
Mode of Examination: The Examination shall only be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT).
Pattern: The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be attempted with a break of 30 minutes between them.
Paper I
Total Marks:100
Number of questions: 50
Duration: 1 hour (First shift : 9.30 am to 10.30 am and Second shift: 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm)
The questions will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.
Paper II
Total Marks: 200
Number of questions: 100
Duration: 2 hours (First Shift: 11.00 am to 1.00 pm and Second Shift: 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm)
This will be based on the subject selected by the candidate. All the questions of Paper–II will be compulsory.
