National Defence Academy

The National Defence Academy was formed on December 7, 1954 and its formal inauguration took place on 16 January 1955. However, the concept of the NDA was conceived at the conclusion of the Second World War when six years of fierce combat had emphatically underlined the need for 'Jointness' in modern warfare and on 1 January, 1949 the Armed Forces Academy having its military Academy and the Indian Military Academy and the Joint Services Wing were commissioned.

After much deliberation, Pune was chosen because for its salubrious climatic conditions, suitability of terrain for military training, proximity to the Arabian sea, existence of an operational existence of a combined training center and the 'mock' landing ship, HMS Angostura, on the north bank of the Khadakwasla Lake.

Joint Training Team

After the Kargil war, the Kargil Review Committee (KRC) commented on the the lack of jointness in our Armed Forces wings. The criticality of jointmanship to national security was finally acknowledged and interlinked. NDA took lead in implementing the recommendation of KRC in letter and spirit. As a result, Joint Training Team was set up in Autumn Term 2007.

Joint training at the National Defence Academy focuses on inter-service cooperation for synchronization of all components of military power to achieve a common military aim. The common aspects of the three services are covered in the curriculum of joint training. This includes weapon handling, map reading, military law, history and organisation of each service and analysis of military campaigns and operations.
