NIEPID: National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

The National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) (Formerly National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped) established in the year 1984 at Manovikasnagar, Secunderabad (TS) is an Autonomous Body under the administrative control of Deparment of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. NIEPID (Formely NIMH) is dedicated to provide quality services to Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) in the National interest. The institute endeavors to excel in building capacities to empower Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan).

Since the quality of life of every Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) is equal to other citizens in the country, in that they live independently to the maximum extent possible and through constant professional endeavors, National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Formerly National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped) empowers the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) to access the state of the art rehabilitation intervention viz., educational, therapeutic, vocational, employment, leisure and social activities, sports, cultural programmes and full participation.

Courses Offered at NIEPID

The following long term courses are offered at NIEPID

DVR (MR)

This course is designed to provide services of vocational training and employment guidance suitable to the persons with mental retardation to develop the following competencies:
  • Identify and assess the readiness of persons with mental retardation to be vocationally trained and employed. Develop appropriate work behavior in the persons with mental retardation.
  • Manage problem behaviors,
  • Develop work skills and to assess them
  • Be conversant with task analysis and job simplification,
  • Set up appropriate work stations,
  • Counsel the persons with mental retardation, care givers' and society.
  • Assist and set up vocational training and employment facilities for the persons with mental retardation. 
Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Applicant must have completed Ten plus two or equivalent examination in general education.

For Foreign Nationals:
  • 15% of the total intake approved by the Council to be allocated as supernumerary seats for management quota for all the above said programmes at graduate levels.
  • 15% of the total intake approved by the Council to be allocated as supernumerary seats for foreign/ NRI quota.
The fee structures for foreign students are as under:
    (I) Fee for Indian national – at the existing fee rate.
    (II) Foreign national from the SAARC and African countries – Five times of the existing fees.
    (III) Foreign nationals outside the SAARC countries – Fifteen times of the existing fees

Diploma in Early childhood Spl.Education (DECSE (MR))

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) focuses on children below 6years of age and has various modes and approaches in imparting training based on the ability of the target group. This could be home based training, centre based training, placement in regular pre-schools, Anganwadis or Balawadis.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Applicant must have completed Ten plus two or equivalent examinations with 50% for general, OBC, physical handicapped candidate & 45% for SC/ST candidate. Although there is no upper age limit prescribed, but preference will be given to candidates below the age of 35 years. Preference will be given to candidates having higher
academic qualifications, experience of working with persons with mental challenged, parents/siblings, persons residing in rural areas, etc. Reservation of seats for SC/ST/OBC candidates and person with physical disabilities will be as per Central Government Rules.

D.Ed Special Education (MR)

B.Ed Special Education (MR)

The above functions are envisaged keeping in mind the National Policy on Education 1986, which states (1) children with mild disabilities will be in regular schools, (2) children with severe disabilities will be in special schools, (3) vocationalization of education should be considered in school level, (4) teacher training programmes should be re-oriented to include children with special needs and (5) voluntary efforts must be encouraged.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Applicant must have completed their B.A./B.Sc. or an equivalent degree at graduate level depending on the requirements for the particular course. The eligibility for admission is 45% aggregate in the qualifying degree examination. While no minimum and maximum age is prescribed, preference will be given to those below 35 years of age.

Postgraduate Diploma in Early Intervention (PGDEI)

Children with developmental delays will show significant improvement if they are detected early and professional services rendered at an early age. These services are trans-disciplinary in nature and holistic in approach covering child development, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and family intervention. This course is affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must have passed MBBS, BMR or BRS (MR), or B.Ed in Special Education,
or
Applicants must have completed masters in child development or bachelors in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy
or
Applicants must have completed masters in child psychology with 50% aggregate marks in case of general & OBC candidates, 40% marks in case of SC & ST candidates are eligible to apply for this course.

Age: While no minimum and maximum age is prescribed, preference will be given to those below 35 years of age.

M.Ed Special Education (MR)

The M.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) has been launched. If we look at the scenario of educational services in the country, we have a large number of special schools, special classes in regular schools, integrated schools, inclusive education and special education programming in community based setting. The M.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation), aims at training special educators to work with children having mental retardation, in different settings as mentioned above. A person qualified in M.Ed Spl. Edn (MR) can serve as master trainer to teach special educators under going training at diploma or graduation levels in special education (MR). In addition they can assume the role of researchers, leaders, capacity builders, developer and catalysts in the area of special education (MR).

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:
  • Applicants must have successfully completed their B.Ed. (Special Education) in respective disability area from a recognized University or any other degree considered equivalent to B.Ed. (Special Education) from an affiliating University and/ or teaching department under any university recognized by U.G.C.

  • Applicants must have successfully completed their B.Ed. General course and has successfully completed a one year Diploma Course in Special Education in respective disability area recongnized by the Rehabilitation Council of India with minimum 50 percent marks in each course.

  • Applicants must have successfully completed their B.Ed. in particular specialization may be allowed for M.Ed. multi - category but the reverse is not allowed. B.Ed. with multi- category should not be admitted for specialization in a single disability at the M.Ed. level.

M.Phil in Rehabilitation Psychology

The course is organized as rigorous two year programme with extensive theoretical inputs and intensive practical skills in disability rehabilitation.

The function of rehabilitation psychologist will involve a convergence of three roles, namely, Clinician, Counselor, and Social/Community Psychologist.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must have successfully completed their M.A./M.Sc. degree in Psychology from a University recognized by the UGC with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate. For SC/ST/OBC category, minimum of 50% marks in aggregate is essential.

NIEPID Admission Procedure

Admissions are made on the basis of academic qualifications required and in accordance with the prevailing rules of the Institute and the affiliated Universities. Seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribes (ST) / Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates as per the Central Government rules.
