Recruitment of Technicians in Indian Railways

The Indian Railways is known to have a job for everyone. Be it for a candidate who is just 5th standard pass to someone who has done an Engineering degree. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has recently published  notification inviting applications from eligible candidates for recruitment of technicians at various levels across different railway zones. The candidates who have completed Matriculation under 10+2 pattern and hold a technical certificate from an ITI  College or similar. Here given details for Technicians' Recruitment in Indian Railways.

Pay Scale for Technician in Indian Railways

The technicians in Indian Railways receive a Level 02 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix with initial pay of ‘19900/- and other benefits such as House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance, Dearness Allowance, Grade Pay, Medical Benefits, etc.

Important Dates for the Recruitment of Technicians

  • Start of Application Process: February
  • End of Application Process: March
  • Date for First stage Computer Based Test (CBT): April / May
Note: The official dates for the recruitment exam have not been announced. The same shall be intimated through RRB's website.

Eligibility Criteria for Technicians in Indian Railways

Candidates are required to fulfill all the eligibility criteria as prescribed for the post(s).

Educational Qualification

Matriculation under 10+2 system and ITI in the trade of Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic/ Millwright Maintenance Mechanic/ Mechanic Radio & TV/ Electronics Mechanic/ Mechanic Motor vehicle/ Wireman/ Tractor Mechanic / Armature & Coil Winder/ Mechanic Diesel / Heat Engine/ Turner/ Machinist/ Refrigeration & AC mechanic. 

Applicants with  Diploma or Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile or a combination of various streams of these engineering disciplines from recognised institutions in lieu ITI will also be eligible to apply for ALP.

Nationality/Citizenship

Find below the list of eligible candidates as per their Nationality or Citizenship
(i)  A candidate must either be:
a. an Indian citizen, or
b. a subject of Nepal, or
c. a subject of Bhutan, or
d. a Tibetan refugee who has come to India, before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling down in India, or
e. an Indian origin person who has migrated from Vietnam, Ethiopia, Zaire, Malawi, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, East African Countries of Kenya, Sri Lanka, Burma and Pakistan with the intention of permanently settling down in India.
f. The Government of India should issue a certificate in favor of the candidate belonging to the categories (b), (c), (d) and (e)

The candidates have to submit the eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India during Document Verification. Failing which their candidature shall stand cancelled.

Medical Standards

Candidates are required to fulfill all the medical standards as per the requirement of the post(s) they have opted for. Those found medically unsuitable shall not be given any alternative appointment. Visual Acuity Standard is considered as one of the important criteria of medical fitness of railway staff.

Medical Standard: A-1
General Fitness: Physically fit in all respects
Visual Acuity:
Distance Vision: 6/6, 6/6 without glasses with fogging test (must not accept 2D)
Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses and Must pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision, Night Vision, Mesopic Vision etc.

Medical Standard: B-1
General Fitness: Physically fit in all respects
Visual Acuity:
Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 4D)
Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and Must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Night Vision, Mesopic Vision etc.

Medical Standard: B-2
General Fitness: Physically fit in all respects
Visual Acuity:
Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 4D)
Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and Must pass test for Binocular Vision, etc.

Note: If any information furnished by the candidate in his/her application form is found false/incorrect, the candidature of those candidates will be rejected forthwith.

Age Limit

The age of the candidate should be between 18 - 28 Years. However, there is a relaxation of upper age limit as given below:
  1. SC/ST candidates: 5 Years
  2. OBC-Non Creamy Layer candidates: 3 Years
  3. Ex-Servicemen candidates who have put in more than 6 months service after attestation: Up to the extent of service rendered in Defence plus 3 years
  4. Persons With Disabilities (PWD) UR: 10 Years
  5. PWD OBC-Non Creamy Layer: 13 Years
  6. PWD SC/ST: 15 Years
  7. Candidates ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989: 5 Years
  8. Candidates who are serving Group ‘C’ and Erstwhile Group ‘D’ Railway Staff, Casual Labour and Substitutes in Railway who have put in minimum of 3 years service (continuous or in broken spells)
    UR: 40 Years
    OBC-Non Creamy Layer: 43 Years
    SC/ST: 45 Years
  9. Candidates who are working in Quasi-Administrative offices of the Railway organization such as Railway Canteens, Co-operative Societies and Institutes: Up to the extent of service rendered (or) 5 Years, whichever is lower.
  10. Women candidates, who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated from husband but not remarried:
    UR: 35 Years
    OBC-Non Creamy Layer: 38 Years
    SC/ST: 40 Years
  11. Course Completed Act Apprentices applying for the posts for which minimum qualification is ITI/Course Completed Act Apprenticeship: Shall be relaxed to the extent of Apprentice Training undergone by them under the Apprentice Act 1961
  12. Candidates who are Course Completed Act Apprentice under the Apprenticeship Act before attaining the age of 25 years
    UR: 35 Years
    OBC-Non Creamy Layer: 38 Years
    SC/ST: 40 Years

Exam Pattern for the Recruitment of Technicians

The exam pattern for the recruitment of Technicians would comprise of two steps, viz.
First stage CBT and Second Stage CBT)

Marks obtained by the candidates will be normalized in both the stages of exam.

Negative Marking: There shall be negative marking of 1/3rd of the marks allotted for incorrect answers (applicable only for First and Second Stage CBT). No negative marking shall be applicable for Computer Based Aptitude Test (AT).

Examination Procedure Technician Recruitment

The recruitment process shall involve First Stage CBT, Second Stage CBT, Computer Based Aptitude Test and Document Verification as per requirement.

First Stage CBT

The First Stage CBT is for the screening of candidates. The questions will generally be in conformity with the educational standards and/or minimum technical qualifications prescribed for the posts. The shortlisting of candidates for the second stage of exam will be done as per the score obtained by the candidates in their first stage of examination.
Duration: 60 mins
No. of Questions: 75 Objective Type Multiple Choice Questions
Minimum percentage of marks for eligibility in various categories: UR-40%, OBC-30%, SC-30%, ST -25%. These percentage of marks for eligibility may be relaxed by 2% for PWD candidates in case of shortage of PWD candidates against vacancies reserved for them.

Candidates who are shortlisted under the reservation category shall continue to be considered only under reservation for all subsequent stages of recruitment process.

The Questions papers are likely to include questions from the following topics

Mathematics
Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work; Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern etc.

General Intelligence and Reasoning
Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical reasoning, classification, directions, statement-Arguments and Assumptions etc.

General Science

The syllabus under this shall cover Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of 10th standard level.
General awareness on current affairs in Science & Technology, Sports, Culture, Personalities, Economics, Politics and other subjects of importance.

Second Stage CBT

Total number of candidates shortlisted for the second stage CBT shall be 15 times the community wise total vacancy of ALP and Technician Posts notified against the RRB as per their merit in First Stage CBT. However, Railways possesses all the rights to increase/decrease the limit of vacancies in total or for any specific trade(s) as required to ensure availability of adequate candidates for all the notified posts.

The Second Stage CBT shall comprise of two parts viz Part A and Part B

Total Duration: 2 hours and 30 Minutes (for Part A and Part B together)

PART A
The marks obtained by the candidate in Part A alone shall be used for short listing of candidates for further stages of recruitment process. However, candidates should secure the qualifying mark in Part B.
Duration: 90 Min
No of Questions: 100

The broad topics that are covered under this shall be Engineering Drawing (Projections, Views, Drawing Instruments, Lines, Geometric figures, Symbolic Representation), Units, Measurements, Mass Weight and Density, Work Power and Energy, Speed and Velocity, Heat and Temperature, Basic Electricity, Levers and Simple Machines, Occupational Safety and Health, Environment Education, IT Literacy etc.
General Awareness on Current Affairs in Science & Technology, Sports, Culture, Personalities, Economics, Politics and any other subjects of importance.

PART B
The part B shall have questions from the trade syllabus prescribed by Director General of Employment & Training (DGET). It is qualifying in nature and Candidates with ITI/Trade Apprenticeship qualification will be required to appear in the section having questions from the relevant trade. Candidates holding Degree, Diploma and HSC(10 2) having eligibility for the posts of ALP have to select relevant trade from the list of trades listed against their engineering discipline/HSC(10 2).
Duration: 60 Min
No of Questions: 75
Qualifying Mark: 35 % (Applicable for all candidates and therefore no relaxation is permissible)

  5. Engineering Discipline(Diploma/Degree): HSC (10 2) with Physics and Maths
    Relevant trade for PART B Qualifying Test to be selected from: Electrician/Electronics Mechanic/Wireman
Note: The selected candidates are required to undergo a training process wherever prescribed and will receive a stipend as applicable.

Examination Fees for the recruitment of Technicians

For Candidates belonging to SC/ ST / Ex-Serviceman / PWDs / Female / Transgender / Minorities / Economically backward class: Rs. 250
For the other remaining candidates: Rs. 500/-

The payment can be made both online and offline -

a. Online
Through internet banking or debit/credit cards .

b. Offline
The fees can be paid:
i. Through SBI Bank Branch Challan.
ii. Through Post Office Challanl.
*Minorities include Zoroastrians, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis and Muslims. However, it is subject to inclusion/deletion/revision till the closing date.
*Economically Backward Class (EBC) candidates would include those families whose annual income is less than Rs. 50,000. A valid income certificate should be produced by them.

Verification of Documents
Candidates are required to bring the following documents in original to complete the verification process:
  1. High School Examination or Matriculation Certificate or other Equivalent Exam certificate as an age proof and qualification.
  2. Higher Secondary or Pre-University or 10+2 / Inter Certificate
  3. Diploma or SCVT or NCVT or Engineering Degree Certificate with Semester wise Mark Sheets
  4. Caste Certificate as applicable (SC/ST and OBC-NCL certificate)
  5. Non creamy layer declaration candidates
  6. Income Certificate for the Economically Backward Classes (for Waiving of Examination Fee)
  7. Original discharge certificate for Ex-serviceman.
  8. Aadhaar Card Photo Copy of both sides
  9. Medical Certificate for PWD candidates
  10. NOC with the date of appointment from serving employees
  11. NOC from Serving Defence Personnel with probable date of discharge.
  12. Minority Community declaration (use Non - judicial Stamp Paper).
  13. In case of formal change of name, candidates are required to submit a Gazette notification and /0r/any legal document.
  14. Receipt of payment if made through a bank challan at any SBI branch or Pay-in-slip at Computerized post office.
  15. Transgender candidates should bring a Self-Certification.
  16. J & K domicile certificate.
  17. Certificate of eligibility from the Govt. of India
  18. Decree of judicial or divorce separation from the competent Court of Law
  19. An Affidavit stating that the candidate has not remarried.
  20. Widowed candidates should bring a Death Certificate of the spouse and an Affidavit stating that the candidate has not remarried.
  21. Ex-Servicemen candidates who secure a civil employment after applying for this CEN should give a self declaration to the concerned employer about the details of application against this CEN, as soon as they join. The acknowledged copy of this declaration along with NOC from the civil employer should be produced during DV.

How to for the apply for post of Technicians in Indian Railways

The application forms are to be submitted online only through RRB websites.
  1. Candidates are required to submit only one application form. If more than one application form is submitted, it would result in disqualification and debarment.
