Indian Engineering Services (IES) Selection Test

There is a popular good old phrase; the engineers are nation builders. Contrary to common human perception that engineers work with bricks, mortar and machines, engineers are more than often involved in Social Engineering together with machines. The Government of India (GoI) appoints Engineering Officers with various government ministries and departments on a year to year basis. To find these technocrats the Constitution of India has provisions to conduct Engineering Services Examination (ESE). The examination is held once a year and open to all college graduates with a degree in Engineering and equivalent. The Examination has the same status as Indian Civil Services however held separately to recruit top level technocrats with different government agencies.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India administers Engineering Services Examination (ESE). It's held in two parts: ESE Preliminary Test and ESE Main. The preliminary test is a screening test only to short out candidates who can appear for ESE Main. Again ESE Main is held in two stages: ESE Main Written and ESE Interview. The candidates who find place in the merit list of ESE Main Written are called by the commission to appear for Personality Test / Interview. On the basis of marks obtained in the ESE Main and Interview the commission prepares a final merit list and recommends the names to the government for recruitment in Indian Engineering Services.
