Engineering Services (Main) Examination

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India invites Detailed Application Forms (DAF) from candidates who are declared qualified through Engineering Services Examination (ESE) Prelims to appear for Engineering Services Examination (ESE) Main. The ESE Main is two stage examination; i.e. Written Test and Personality Test /  Interview. Candidates can write written test in Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. Merit List is prepared for the written test and candidates are called by the commission for Personality Test / Interview. The finally selected candidates are appointed with engineering department of different government agencies at distinct rank.

Written Test Pattern Engineering Services Main Examination

The Engineering Services Examination (ESE) Main tests the candidates in following 4 areas: Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. A candidate chose his / her branch of engineering to appear for ESE during application procedure. Based on choice a candidate appear for one the test from available branches.
The ESE Main is a two paper test. Both papers asks subjective type questions, Candidates are required to provide descriptive answers. Each paper carries 300 marks, that means 600 marks in total for both papers. Time allowed to write each paper is 3 hours. Paper 1 is held in morning session while paper 2 is held in evening session. A merit list is prepared based on the performance in written test and candidates are invited to appear for Personality Test / Interview which carries 200 marks. Final Merit list is prepared based on the performance in written examination and Interview

Once result is declared for Engineering Services Examination Prelims, the qualified candidates are required to submit Detailed Application Forms (DAF) for Engineering Services Examination (ESE) Main.
