Eligibility Criteria Engineering Services Preliminary Examination
There are various eligibility criteria that the candidates are required to fulfill to apply UPSC Engineering Services Exam. These include:
Age: The candidates should be minimum of 21 - 30 years as on 1st August of the year that the student sits for the examination. However, there is age relaxation up to 35 years for candidates belonging to certain categories including departmental candidates as per the UPSC's notice.
Educational Qualifications: The candidates must have the following educational qualifications to apply for UPSC Engineering Services Exam:
(a) A engineering degree from a University that is incorporated by an Act of the State or Central Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or deemed Universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956;
or
(b) Passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India);
or
(c) If the candidate has a diploma or a degree in Engineering from a foreign Institution/ College/ University under certain conditions that the Indian government has recognised,
or
(d) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Graduate Membership of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India);
or
(e) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Associate Membership Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India;
or
(f) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Graduate Membership of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959.
N.B.: If he/she is a candidate for the Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts), then they are required to fulfill the above qualification or the following qualification:
M.Sc. or its equivalent degree with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
All candidates who are in their final year of Engineering degree or its equivalent exam are also eligible to compete for UPSC Engineering Services Exam 2010, however such candidates will have to submit their proof of passing the engineering examination, after the clearing the written exam.
Nationality: The candidates applying for UPSC Engineering Services Exam must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Bhutan, or
(c) a subject of Nepal, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who has come to India before January 1st, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) if he/she is a person of Indian origin and has migrated from Vietnam, Zaire and Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, East African countries of Kenya, Sri Lanka, Burma or from Pakistan, with the motive to permanently settling down in India.
All candidates those who belong to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) mentioned above would require a certificate of eligibility that shall be issued by the Government of India. Thus the appointment letter to those candidates will only be given after the Government of India issues the necessary eligibility certificate.

The UPSC conducts Engineering Services Preliminary Examination in two papers as detailed below
ESE Paper - I
- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude
- Maximum Marks: 200
- Time allowed: 2 Hours
- Type of Exam: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) / Objective Type Questions
ESE Paper – II
- Subject Specific Paper (Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics & Telecommunication)
- Maximum Marks: 300
- Type of Exam: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) / Objective Type Questions

How to apply for Engineering Services Preliminary Examination
The candidates are required to fill up online application form using the official website www.upsconline.nic.in
Candidates (except Female/SC/ST/ PH who are exempted from payment of fee) have to pay an exam fee of Rs. 200 either using SBI Net Banking/ State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur Netbanking/ State Bank of Mysore Netbanking/ State Bank of Patiala/ State Bank of Travancore Netbanking or Depositing the cash in any SBI branch or online payment using Visa/ Master debit or credit card. Please read official instructions carefully and fill your application in walking steps as 1, 2, 3. This is mandatory to submit application successfully.
Admit Card Engineering Services Preliminary Examination
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) makes available ESE Prelims Admit Card for Download from official website for all successful applicants. The candidates are required to download and print admit card to appear for the examination. The release of admit card is also informed by the commission through email and SMS. This is important document and serves as Hall Ticket to appear for the examination and further use through other official procedures till the recruitment process is over.
