A career in civil services is one of the most prestigious career options among the youth.The Civil Services selection is one of the most challenging exams in India.Career opportunities exist in civil service in a variety of areas, such as law enforcement, administrative services, foreign affairs, accounting and public affairs. Union Public Service Commission conducts civil services exam for the recruitment of officers including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.It is conducted in two phases - a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II also popularly known as Civil Service Aptitude Test or (CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, followed by a personality test (interview).
Eligibility Criteria for Civil Services Exam
The candidate must be a citizen of India between 21 and 30 years of age as on August 1 every year for the exam.

Candidate must hold a Bachelor's Degree from any of the recognized universities
Candidates with professional and technical qualifications recognised by the Government or its equivalent are also eligible to apply.
Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination. However, they must submit a certificate from the concerned University that they have passed the final professional medical examination.
Responsibilities of a Civil Servant
Handling affairs of government that involve framing and implementation of policy in consultation with the concerned minister
Implementing policies through supervision and also traveling to the places where the approved policies will be implemented
Implementing policies comprises disbursement of funds through personal supervision
State Public Service Commission
Every State has a separate ‘Public Service Commission’ which is responsible for conducting competitive examinations to recruit new candidates into a particular State’s Civil Service. A number of the jobs are executive in nature and the officer will be directly responsible for implementing the State Government’s plans, schemes and programs.
Jobs in the State Civil Services range from Sub-Divisional Magistrates or Deputy Collectors, Additional District Magistrates, Municipal Administrators. Deputy/Joint /Additional Directors or Assistant Commissioners in the State administration. In case of State Police Services, recruits generally get the job of a Deputy or Additional Superintendent of Police.
