Medical Education in India
Medical profession is one of the most prestigious professions of India. Over the years, India has produced several doctors who are world renowned and are known for their skills. However, there is still a dearth of doctors in the country and India is in true need of quality doctors. However, admission to MBBS programs need years of hard work and dedication.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018 (Ordinance 8 of 2018), the Medical Council of India shall stand superseded now is not a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India.
Now the Supreme Court has allowed the Central Government to replace the medical council and with the help of five specialized doctors monitor the medical education system in India, from July 2017.
MBBS Degree in India
Students who have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology can opt for MBBS. The MBBS is a 5.5 year (4.5 years academic education 1 year mandatory internship) at the undergraduate level. One can go for postgraduate program which is of 2 years and leads to MD and MS depending upon the area of specialisation. The courses taught at the undergraduate level include Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry,Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine, Ear Nose and Throat and Ophthalmology among others.
Opportunities in Medical Careers
Candidates with a Medical Degree are appointed as Medical College Faculty, Medical Doctors, Health consultants etc. with hospitals. Job position depends on highest level or degree, expertise, experience and medical stream etc.
Governing Bodies
The Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India are two main governing bodies for medical education in India.
