Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service (IES/ISS) Examination

The Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination  / IES & ISS is the examination for recruitment of Economists and Statisticians with various departments of Government of India. These are the people who make strengths for an important pillar of government called Finance. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India has given responsibility for the government to conduct recruitment examination for the appointment these officers. Exam Pattern Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service

The UPSC administers Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination according to following plans
  • Part I. Written examination carrying a maximum of 1000 marks in the subjects as shown below.
  • Part II. Viva voce of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks.
PART-I
The subjects of the written examination under Part I, the maximum marks allotted to each subject/paper and the time allowed shall be as follows:

Indian Economic Service (IES) Exam

  • General English: Maximum Marks- 100 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • General Studies Maximum Marks- 100 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.).
  • General Economics-I: Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • General Economics-II: Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • General Economics-III: Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.).
  • Indian Economics: Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)

Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Exam

  • General English: Maximum Marks- 100 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • General Studies Maximum Marks- 100 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.).
  • Statistics-I (Objective) : Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • Statistics-II (Objective) : Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • Statistics-III (Descriptive) : Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
  • Statistics-IV (Descriptive) : Maximum Marks- 200 ( Time Allotted: 3 hrs.)
Note-1 : Statistics I & II will be of Objective Type Questions (80 questions with maximum marks of 200 in each paper) to be attempted in 120 minutes.
Note-2 : Statistics III & IV will be of Descriptive Type having Short Answer/ Small Problems Questions (50%) and Long Answer and Comprehension problem questions (50%). At least one Short Answer and One Long Answer Question from each section is compulsory. In Statistics-IV, equal number of questions i.e. 50% weightage from all the sub-sections below and candidates have to choose any two sub-sections and answer.
Note 3 : The papers on General English and General Studies, common to both Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service will be of subjective type.
Note 4 : All other papers of Indian Economic Service will be of subjective type.
Note-5 : The details of standard and syllabi for the examination are given in Section-II below.
Note 6: The question papers in all subjects in Indian Economic Service Examination and in Indian
Statistical Service Examination will be of Conventional (essay) type except in Statistics Paper I and Statistics Paper II which are Objective Type Papers.

PART - II
Viva-voce: On the basis of performance in written examination IES/ISS, the UPSC invites eligible candidates to appear for Viva-Voce.

UPSC administers IES/ISS Exams across following Indian Cities:

Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttak, Delhi, Dispur, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Shillong, Shimla

Eligibility: Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination

Nationality: A candidate must be either
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) A subject of Nepal, or
(c) A subject of Bhutan, or
(d) A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Age: Candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years. Relaxation is age criteria is available to reserved category candidates as per government of India Gaette.
Educational Qualification:
For Indian Economic Service: Candidates must have obtained a Post-graduate Degree in Economics/ Applied Economics/ Business Economics /Econometrics
For Indian Statistical Service: Candidate must have obtained a Bachelors Degree in Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics

Examination Fee: Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination

To appear for IES/ISS Examination candidates are required to submit an examination fee of Rs. 200 either in Cash at Designated SBI Branches or using SBI netbanking facility. Fees can also be using Credit Card / Debit Card etc. Female/SC/ST/PwD candidates are not required to pay examination fee.

How to apply for Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination

The application process for IES/ISS examination is completely online. Candidates require to log on to UPSC Form filling website and read and follow instructions carefully for a successful application. A valid email id and mobile number is mandatory for registration. UPSC will send all future communication regarding this examination on your registered email and phone.

Admit Card: Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Examination

The UPSC uploads e-admit cards of successful applicants on its official portal and notifies through email and SMS. A detailed press release is also published on official website related availability of e-admit cards. Candidates need to download and print copy of admit card and carry on the exam day to exam centre. The admit card is very important document and shall be prevented till admission procedure is over.
