The Assam Rifles formed in the Year 1835 has the honor of being one of the oldest Paramilitary Forces in India. Currently its backed by 63,747 active personnel. The Government’s budget 2018-19 for Assam Rifles is 5,548.74 crore i.e. equivalent of (US$830 million). The agency functions under Assam Rifles Act, 2006 & Rules 2010 comes under the purview of Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India.
Known for its courage both on and off the war fields, the Assam Rifles has received many Military Decorations since independence.
The Director General Assam Rifles (DG AR) is the highest authority of the Assam Rifles. Mr HG Bartly, CIE, IP has the honor of being first DG to Assam Rifles. He appointed on 17 Sep 1947 and and served till 14 Aug 1948. The rank of DG is army equivalent of Lieutenant General.
